Upholding Justice, No Matter the Cost

Speaking Truth to Power in Islam

As-salamu alaykum brothers and sisters

Imagine the blistering desert sands of 7th century Arabia. A solitary figure stands resolute, undeterred by the hatred and persecution hurled his way. This was Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, defying the unjust norms of his society by preaching the oneness of God. His courage in confronting idolatry and oppression ultimately sparked a movement that transformed the Arabian peninsula.

Today, we are going to explore a topic that sits at the heart of our faith - the sacred responsibility to raise our voices against injustice.

The Quranic Imperative

The struggle against injustice did not end with the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime. The Quran enshrines this battle as an eternal covenant for believers. Allah (SWT) commands: "You are the best nation produced for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong." (3:110)

These words resonate with a profound call to action. We are to be the vanguards of justice, uncompromising in our pursuit of what is right and our rejection of all that is wrong. The Quran further emphasises, "Let there be a group among you who call others to good, and enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong: those who do this shall be successful." (3:104)

Upholding Justice, No Matter the Cost

Undoubtedly, standing up against injustice often demands great sacrifice. The Quran acknowledges this reality, exhorting believers: "O believers! Be upholders of justice, bearers of witness to Allah, even if against yourselves or parents and relatives." (4:135) Our commitment to truth must transcend personal interests or familial ties.

The Prophet's ﷺ grandson, Hussain ibn Ali (RA), exemplified this spirit when he rejected the tyrannical rule of Yazid and was ultimately martyred in Karbala while fighting for justice. His defiant stance reminds us that no oppressor is to be obeyed when engaging in wrongdoing.

A Powerful Lesson from the Past

The Quran recounts a gripping tale that underscores the grave consequences of enabling wrongdoing. Allah (SWT) says: "Therefore when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We saved those who had tried to prevent the doing of evil. And We meted out a severe punishment to the transgressors because they were rebellious. And then, when they disdainfully persisted in doing what they had been forbidden to do, We said to them, 'Be as apes, despised!'" (7:165-166)

This verse serves as a stark warning against complacency in the face of injustice. Those who strive to uphold righteousness are rewarded, while transgressors who defiantly persist in wrongdoing face divine punishment.

The Rippling Impact of Our Voices

When we raise our voices against injustice, the impact reverberates far beyond our immediate surroundings. The Prophet's ﷺ courage ignited a transformative movement that reshaped the Arabian peninsula's social fabric. Throughout history, countless brave individuals have confronted oppressive systems, sparking revolutions, fostering reforms, and paving the way for greater equity and human rights.

As Muslims, our voices have the power to echo truth across generations, inspiring positive change in our communities and beyond. As the Prophet ﷺ emphasized: "Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart - and that is the weakest of faith." (Muslim)

So let us embrace the courageous spirit of our faith, raising our voices against all forms of injustice. May our words and actions uplift the oppressed, challenge the transgressors, and create a society rooted in compassion, justice, and the eternal values of Islam.

Jazakum Allahu khayran.

This is a blessed Book which We sent down to you [Muhammad], for people to ponder over its messages, and for those with understanding to take heed. (38:29)
